Highlights: Lipodystrophy leads to severe metabolic problems. Metabolic abnormalities can be present at the time of diagnosis or may develop over time as the disease progresses.

Abstract:

Background: Lipodystrophy syndromes are rare multisystem disorders caused by a loss of adipose tissue on a whole or in part. Lipodystrophy is linked to adipose tissue malfunction caused by a lack of leptin. Lipodystrophy causes serious metabolic problems. Insulin-resistant diabetes, severe hypertriglyceridemia, and fat accumulation in ectopic organs such as the liver are examples of these disorders, which are linked to endorgan complications. Metabolic abnormalities can exist at the time of diagnosis or emerge as the disease progresses. Subtype-specific presentations due to underlying molecular etiology in genetic forms and autoimmune in acquired forms, in addition to metabolic problems, contribute to substantial morbidity in lipodystrophy.
